Half Of A Yellow Sun - Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche

Updated: Mar 15, 2021

Set against the background of the Nigerian civil war in the late 1960s when the Igbo people of the province of Biafra attempted to secede from the country of Nigeria. This novel tells the story of five principal characters whose lives are torn apart by events.

A university professor, his houseboy, his girlfriend, her sister and the sister's lover are all affected by the war in different ways. The book explores the themes of love, loyalty, class, race, ethnic and tribal allegiances and colonialism. The characters respond in their own ways to the deprivation and upheaval caused by the civil war and the end of their former way of life.

It's an easy read in terms of the writing but the themes and the violence described are more difficult to take and in many ways this is a sad story. Nevertheless it has haunted me for many years and I have read it several times.
